How Tatyana Kim Built the Logistics and Digital Infrastructure of Wildberries

Tatyana KimFounder and CEO, Wildberries19 October 20262 min read

Tatyana Kim transitioned from language instruction to constructing one of the largest online retail ecosystems in the region. After launching an e-commerce enterprise in 2004, Kim directed the business through rapid technological shifts and massive supply chain expansion. Today, Wildberries processes hundreds of thousands of orders daily, connecting millions of consumers across multiple international markets with thousands of brands across clothing, electronics, household goods, and food.

Building an E-Commerce Infrastructure

In its initial operating phase, the venture concentrated on selling catalog garments and European apparel. By 2006, Kim established an operational base in Milkovo within the Moscow region, assembling a core team that included courier networks, telephone service staff, and information technology specialists. Wildberries introduced early customer experience innovations to the digital retail sector, offering flat delivery rates and building regional pickup locations outfitted with fitting rooms where buyers could try on items before completing purchases.

This fulfillment network expanded significantly over subsequent years. From a foundation of 7,000 pickup locations in 2020, the physical footprint grew to encompass over 90,000 pickup points across active operating markets by 2026. These locations process approximately 90 percent of all order deliveries, bringing pickup options within walking distance for consumers. To back this fulfillment network, Kim overseen the development of over 4 million square meters of company-built warehouse space in Russia, alongside constructing major logistics hubs in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus to accelerate local order fulfillment.

Strategic Model Evolution and Market Expansion

Between 2014 and 2016, Kim executed a fundamental strategy pivot by converting Wildberries from a standard retailer into an open platform marketplace model. This shift enabled third-party vendors to list goods directly on the catalog, positioning the company for rapid scaling during the surge in online ordering that began in 2020. By 2022, platform sales turnover reached 1.669 trillion rubles, accounting for one-third of all digital commerce sales turnover in Russia.

Under Kim’s leadership, the geographic reach of Wildberries extended beyond Russia into Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Kim also expanded the company into corporate financial services with the 2020 acquisition of Standard-Credit Bank, which was renamed Wildberries Bank. Outside of direct executive responsibilities at Wildberries, Kim served on the supervisory board of VTB Bank between 2021 and 2022 and was named head of the Russian-Armenian Business Council in 2023.

Technological Integration and Merchant Empowerment

To handle high order volumes across distribution nodes, Kim prioritized advanced automation within main warehouse facilities. Modern fulfillment centers incorporate artificial intelligence tools, sorting conveyor belts, floor navigation robots, and robotic arms to manage inventory, streamline package sorting, and improve workplace safety. For shoppers, the platform deployed automated search assistants, machine-generated visual content, virtual fitting functionality, and a social commerce application called Wibes, which supports 90-second video shopping with immediate purchase features.

Alongside operational automation, Kim created structured support programs for independent merchants joining the marketplace platform. By 2025, female entrepreneurs accounted for 58 percent of active Wildberries vendors. The organization offers foundational trade training and collaborates with regional groups, including the Uzbekistan Women Association in 2024 and Women in Tech Kyrgyzstan in 2025, to expand access to digital trade.
