Roger Penske: Building a Global Automotive Enterprise

Roger PenskeFounder and Chairman, Penske Corporation, Penske Automotive Group19 October 20262 min read

Roger Penske, known as the Captain, made a significant transition from a notable career as a professional racecar driver to establishing a wide-ranging business empire. His entrepreneurial journey culminated in the creation of Penske Corporation, a holding company that oversees various ventures, prominently including the global Penske Automotive Group.

From Driver to Dealer

Penske’s inclination for business emerged early in his life. As a teenager in Ohio, he engaged in buying, repairing, and reselling older cars, demonstrating an innate understanding of commerce. After graduating from Lehigh University, he began his professional career as a sales engineer at Alcoa in 1959, concurrently pursuing his passion for racecar driving. This period proved formative, as his involvement in racing connected him with individuals in the Chevrolet industry. In a pivotal career shift in 1963, he departed from Alcoa to take on a management role at a Chevrolet dealership in Philadelphia. A year later, he acquired this dealership with financial support from his father. This acquisition marked a decisive moment, prompting him to retire from competitive driving in 1965 to fully dedicate his efforts to his burgeoning automotive business. This initial dealership venture laid the essential groundwork for his expansive future in the automotive retail sector.

Expanding the Enterprise

Building on the success of his first dealership, Penske broadened his business interests. In 1969, he founded Penske Truck Leasing in Reading, Pennsylvania, by acquiring an existing truck rental and leasing operation that served eastern Pennsylvania from three locations. This move diversified his portfolio beyond passenger vehicle sales. His various business interests are now consolidated under the Penske Corporation, a holding company he founded and chairs, headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This corporation encompasses a range of enterprises, including a substantial ownership stake in the publicly traded Penske Automotive Group. Other significant holdings within the Penske Corporation include Penske Truck Leasing, which specializes in truck sales, leasing, and fleet maintenance, and Penske Motor Group, which operates car dealerships in California and Texas. Demonstrating his continued engagement with the automotive world, Penske Corporation also acquired the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar in 2019.

A Global Automotive Network

Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (PAG), a key component of Roger Penske’s business framework, stands as a prominent transportation services company. Headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, PAG operates an extensive network of automotive and commercial truck dealerships. These operations are primarily located across the United States, Canada, and various parts of Western Europe, establishing a significant presence in major global markets. Beyond its dealership network, Penske Automotive Group is also involved in the distribution sector. It distributes commercial vehicles, engines, power systems, and their associated parts and services, with a principal focus on the markets of Australia and New Zealand. The company’s reach further extends through its substantial ownership stake in Penske Transportation Solutions. This entity is responsible for managing a vast fleet of over 400,000 trucks, tractors, and trailers, highlighting PAG’s comprehensive involvement across multiple facets of the transportation industry. Penske Automotive Group’s scale and influence are recognized through its inclusion in prominent financial indexes such as the Fortune 500, Russell 1000, and Russell 3000.
