Bob YoungFounder, Lulu Press, Inc.27 October 20262 min readBaca dalam Bahasa Indonesia

Bob Young’s career is marked by a consistent drive to build and innovate, spanning from early computer rental services to pioneering open-source software. His entrepreneurial path eventually led him to establish Lulu.com, a platform designed to democratize publishing and empower independent creators.

From Rentals to Red Hat

Before venturing into the world of self-publishing, Young cultivated a background in technology and business. His early career involved establishing computer rental and leasing operations, including Vernon Computer Rentals, which he founded in 1984. This experience laid a foundation for his subsequent endeavors. In 1993, he founded ACC Corp Inc. A pivotal moment arrived in 1994 when he partnered with Marc Ewing to co-found Red Hat, an open-source software company. Their collaboration began with ACC acquiring the Red Hat trademarks from Ewing. The following year, ACC rebranded as Red Hat Software, later shortened to Red Hat, Inc. His involvement in the open-source movement also included co-founding Linux Journal in 1994, demonstrating an early commitment to accessible information and collaborative development.

Launching Lulu.com

In 2002, Young turned his attention to the publishing industry, identifying an opportunity to leverage technology for individual creators. He founded Lulu.com, an online print-on-demand and self-publishing company, taking on the role of CEO. The platform was conceived to offer a direct route for authors to publish and distribute their work without traditional gatekeepers. Lulu Press, Inc., operating under the trade name Lulu, provides a comprehensive online platform for self-publishing and distribution, headquartered in Morrisville, North Carolina. Under Young’s leadership, the company facilitated the publication of a substantial number of titles, reaching approximately two million by 2014. This initiative reflected a broader interest in making knowledge and creative expression more widely available.

Fostering Independent Authorship

Young’s commitment to promoting self-publishing extended beyond the platform itself. In 2006, he established the Lulu Blooker Prize, an award specifically designed for books that originated as blogs. This prize served a dual purpose: recognizing innovative content creation in the digital age and simultaneously promoting Lulu as a viable publishing avenue for these new forms of authorship. The prize underscored the evolving landscape of content creation and distribution, highlighting how digital platforms could serve as springboards for traditional book formats. His efforts aimed to encourage a diverse range of voices and narratives to find their way into print, aligning with his broader philanthropic focus on access to information and the advancement of knowledge.

Diverse Ventures and Philanthropic Endeavors

Beyond Lulu, Young has maintained a diverse portfolio of business interests and philanthropic activities. He was an early investor in PrecisionHawk, a commercial drone technology company, and served as its CEO from 2015 to 2017, continuing on its board as chairman. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him into the world of sports ownership, purchasing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in 2003 and later acquiring the Forge FC of the Canadian Premier League. He has since sold minority stakes in the Tiger-Cats. Young’s philanthropic work is centered on expanding access to information and advancing knowledge, evidenced by his co-founding of The Center for the Public Domain in 1999. He has also supported organizations such as Creative Commons, Public Knowledge.org, and the Loran Scholarship Foundation, among others, reflecting a consistent dedication to open access and educational initiatives. His journey with Lulu.com stands as a testament to his belief in empowering individuals through technology and accessible platforms.
