Yuri Milner: The Architect of Russia's Internet Giant
Yuri Milner embarked on a distinctive journey from theoretical physics to becoming a pivotal figure in the Russian internet landscape. His career path reflects a keen ability to identify emerging opportunities, ultimately leading him to co-found and chair the internet company known today as VK, which has profoundly shaped digital life in the region.
From Academia to Digital Ventures
Milner’s early professional life began in the realm of theoretical physics, following his graduation from Lomonosov University and subsequent work at the Lebedev Physical Institute. This academic foundation eventually gave way to a shift towards business, marked by a significant decision to pursue a Master of Business Administration at the Wharton School in the United States, a pioneering move for someone from the Soviet Union at the time. After his MBA, Milner spent time at the World Bank, focusing on the development of private sector banking in Russia. He later held leadership positions at Alliance-Menatep and Menatep Bank, gaining valuable experience in the financial sector before turning his attention to the nascent internet industry.
Forging the Internet Incubator
The inspiration to create an internet company struck Milner in the late 1990s, after reviewing an analysis of online business prospects. This led him to establish NetBridge in 1999, securing investment from his associate Gregory Finger and the fund New Century Holding. As president of NetBridge, Milner oversaw an innovative strategy: adapting successful internet business models from the United States for the Russian market. This approach resulted in the creation of several prominent online services, including the portal List.ru, the auction site Molotok.ru, the web-hosting service Boom.ru, and the online shop 24x7. The strategic merger of NetBridge with Port.ru, which owned the Mail.ru service, in 2001, marked a significant consolidation, with Milner taking on the role of CEO for the newly combined entity, Mail.Ru.
Building a Digital Powerhouse
Under Milner’s leadership, Mail.Ru continued to expand its influence. In 2005, he founded Digital Sky Technologies (DST), which later saw Alisher Usmanov become a shareholder. This entity further solidified its position in the digital space, and in 2010, Digital Sky Technologies formally changed its name to Mail.ru Group. That same year, Mail.ru Group achieved a successful initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange, reflecting its substantial market valuation. The group’s portfolio grew to encompass a wide array of digital assets, including the Mail.ru portal, social networks Odnoklassniki and a minority stake in VKontakte, instant messaging service ICQ, and various online payment platforms. Milner served as the chairperson of the board of directors for Mail.ru Group during this period of significant growth. In 2012, he stepped down from his chairperson role and the board to dedicate his focus to DST Global’s international investment activities. The company he helped build, Mail.ru Group, was eventually renamed VK Company Limited in 2021, after its popular social networking service, VKontakte, solidifying its identity as a major corporate presence in the Russian-speaking internet.
