Xavier Niel's Global Telecom Strategy Takes Root in Italy
Xavier Niel has established himself as a prominent figure in the telecommunications sector, known for founding the Iliad group. His career, marked by strategic expansion and a focus on market entry, has seen him guide Iliad from its origins in France to a significant presence in international markets, including Italy.
Reshaping French Telecommunications
Niel’s journey in telecommunications began with early ventures in the Minitel network, where he established services in the late 1980s. This experience was followed by an investment in Worldnet, one of France’s initial consumer internet service providers, which was later sold. In 1999, Niel founded Iliad, launching Free, an internet service provider that introduced a broadband offer combining internet, television, and telephone services through the Freebox. The group further intensified competition in 2012 with the launch of Free Mobile, offering a mobile plan that included unlimited calls, text messages, and mobile data at a price point significantly below existing market offers. This entry led to widespread price reductions across the French mobile sector, demonstrating Niel’s approach to market disruption.
International Expansion and the Italian Market
Building on its success in France, Iliad began to expand its telecommunications operations internationally in the late 2010s. A key part of this strategy was the launch of Iliad Italia in 2018. The company entered the Italian mobile market with a mobile plan that offered competitive pricing, quickly establishing itself as a significant player. By December 2022, Iliad Italia had grown to become the fourth largest mobile operator in the country, with millions of active lines. Beyond Italy, Niel’s investment vehicle, NJJ, has acquired or invested in telecommunications operators across various countries, including Monaco, Switzerland, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, and Ukraine. He also became the largest shareholder in Millicom, a telecommunications group active in Latin America, and later acquired a substantial stake in Vodafone Group, becoming its largest shareholder.
Diverse Ventures and Strategic Investments
Niel’s professional interests extend beyond direct telecommunications operations into a range of other sectors. He is a co-owner of the newspaper Le Monde and has acquired several other media outlets, including Groupe Nice-Matin, France-Antilles, and Paris-Turf. In the real estate sector, he has built a significant stake in Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, an international real estate company. Niel is also an active investor in startups, having cofounded Kima Ventures, a fund that invests in numerous new companies globally each year. His commitment to education and innovation is evident in his creation of 42, a tuition-free technical school, and his role in the inauguration of Station F, a large business incubator in Paris. More recently, Niel has invested in artificial intelligence initiatives, including a research laboratory and a supercomputer, and was an early investor in Mistral AI. He also holds board positions with the US investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.
