Shiv Nadar: Building HCL Technologies from Hardware Beginnings to Global IT Infrastructure
The transformation of the Indian IT services landscape over the past half-century owes much to the corporate strategy established by Shiv Nadar. Beginning as a small business before expanding into global software solutions, his work established foundational infrastructure for the region’s emerging tech ecosystem. Through HCL Technologies and related business ventures, Nadar guided an evolution from hardware distribution to IT operations spanning multiple continents.
Launching Microcomp and the Rise of HCL
In 1967, Nadar started his professional life working at Cooper Engineering Ltd., an enterprise within the Walchand group based in Pune. Soon after, he left this role to pursue an independent venture alongside several business partners, including Ajai Chowdhry, Arjun Malhotra, Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap, and DS Puri. Their initial entity, named Microcomp, targeted the Indian commercial market by selling teledigital calculators.
Building on this experience, Nadar and his partners established HCL in 1976 with an initial capital investment of 187,000 rupees. Over the next three decades, he oversaw the firm’s conversion from an IT hardware provider into a comprehensive IT enterprise. By 1980, the business pursued international expansion through the creation of Far East Computers in Singapore, which focused on selling hardware products. Far East Computers generated one million rupees in revenue during its first year of operation, with Nadar retaining the primary shareholding while stepping back from direct managerial control of that specific entity.
Spinning Off HCL Technologies
A major strategic pivot occurred in 1991 when HCL formally entered the software services market. To capture this opportunity, HCL Technologies was spun out from the original parent organization as a dedicated software company. Headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, the enterprise built a broad international footprint, eventually establishing operations in 60 countries and employing more than 230,000 individuals worldwide.
Under Nadar’s stewardship, HCL Technologies grew into the third-largest technology services firm based in India when measured by revenue and market capitalization. The business adapted its market strategy over time, adopting the distinct brand identity HCLTech alongside the core positioning tagline of Supercharging Progress in 2022.
Executive Transitions and Global Recognition
Nadar maintained executive oversight of the organization for several decades, contributing significantly to its long-term operational structure. In July 2021, he officially stepped down from his position as managing director of HCL Technologies. He was succeeded in this executive role by C Vijayakumar, the chief executive officer of HCL Tech, who assumed the position for a five-year term.
Throughout his career, Nadar’s efforts within the technology sector received prominent national and global acknowledgement. In 2008, he received the Padma Bhushan award for his contributions to the IT industry. In subsequent years, the firm he established achieved several key international rankings. HCLTech earned inclusion on TIME magazine’s World’s Best Companies list in 2025 as the top-ranked technology firm based in India, and later appeared on its World’s Most Sustainable Companies list in 2026, placing among the top five global professional firms. Additionally, the company was featured in Fortune magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies listing in 2026 within the IT services division.
Institutional Governance and Technical Education
Beyond his direct roles within HCL Technologies, Nadar applied his governance experience across prominent technical and management institutions. In 2005, he became a member of the executive board at the Indian School of Business. He further contributed to higher education policy and institutional management by serving as the chairman of the board of governors for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, a position he held until 2014.
