Renzo Rosso: Building an Alternative Fashion Empire from Denim Roots
Renzo Rosso began his career in the Italian garment industry during the mid-1970s, initially working in production management for a local manufacturer. This early experience in the technical side of clothing production laid the groundwork for what would eventually become a global fashion conglomerate. After gaining significant experience and increasing production at his first workplace, he transitioned from an employee to a partner, eventually establishing the brand that would define his early career. Today, as the head of OTB Group, he oversees a diverse portfolio of luxury and contemporary labels that challenge traditional industry structures.
The Evolution of Diesel
The origins of Rosso’s business empire are rooted in the creation of Diesel in the late 1970s. The brand was conceived as an alternative to the established casual wear of the era, taking its name from a fuel source that was then viewed as a modern substitute during a global energy crisis. This positioning was intentional, reflecting a desire to offer a different perspective on denim. Rosso viewed the fashion market through a global lens, believing that consumer lifestyles were more significant than national borders. This approach allowed the brand to expand rapidly across international markets.
In the mid-1980s, Rosso took full control of the company and began to focus heavily on denim innovation. He experimented with various fabric treatments, including stone-washing and specialized washes, to create unique textures and finishes. This technical focus, combined with the assembly of a dedicated design team, propelled the company into a period of significant retail expansion.
Building the OTB Conglomerate
At the turn of the millennium, Rosso began to shift his focus from managing a single brand to building a broader corporate structure. In 2002, he established OTB Group, also known as Only The Brave, to serve as a holding company for his growing interests. This move signaled a new strategy of acquiring and supporting established fashion houses and emerging designers. Unlike traditional luxury groups, the goal for OTB was to create a more accessible and alternative conglomerate that could serve as a platform for the next generation of industry leaders.
A key component of this strategy was the acquisition of Staff International in 2000. This company provided the group with robust manufacturing and distribution capabilities, having already worked with several high-profile designers. Today, this division continues to manage the production and distribution for a variety of licensed labels, reinforcing the group’s industrial foundation.
Strategic Acquisitions and Growth
The OTB portfolio expanded significantly through the acquisition of several iconic fashion houses. One of the most notable additions was Maison Margiela in 2002. Under Rosso’s leadership, the house underwent a period of professionalization and investment in production and management. These efforts resulted in a substantial increase in sales, with the company reaching profitability and doubling its revenue within a few years of the acquisition.
Similarly, the group acquired a majority stake in Viktor & Rolf in 2008. The partnership was based on a shared understanding of creative independence and business scaling. The group has since added other prominent names to its roster, including Marni and Jil Sander, further diversifying its influence across different segments of the luxury market.
Diversification and Modern Operations
Beyond high fashion, Rosso has expanded his business interests into several other sectors. He transformed a children’s wear line into a standalone entity now known as Brave Kid, which specializes in the production and distribution of youth apparel. His investment activities also extend to digital retail and hospitality through Red Circle Investments. This private investment vehicle has held stakes in major online fashion platforms and high-end hotel projects in international locations.
The group’s operations are now centered in Breganze, Italy, where it manages a global workforce and a complex supply chain. In 2023, OTB Group reported annual revenues of 1.9 billion euros, reflecting the scale of the organization under the current leadership of CEO Ubaldo Minelli. From its beginnings as a specialized denim manufacturer, the company has evolved into a multi-faceted organization that balances industrial production with the management of some of the world’s most recognized fashion labels.
