Pierre Omidyar: Omidyar's New Chapter: Championing Independent Journalism with First Look Media
Pierre Omidyar, a technology entrepreneur and software engineer, is widely recognized for his foundational role in the e-commerce landscape. After a significant career creating and scaling one of the internet’s most prominent marketplaces, Omidyar turned his attention to supporting independent journalism, leading to the creation of First Look Media.
From Software Engineering to E-commerce Pioneer
Omidyar’s professional journey began after completing his computer science degree. He joined Claris, an Apple Computer subsidiary, contributing to the upgrade of MacDraw. He then co-founded Ink Development, a startup initially focused on pen-based computing, which later evolved into an e-commerce company named eShop Inc. This venture was acquired by Microsoft, providing Omidyar with an early success in the tech industry.
His most impactful creation, Auction Web, emerged in 1995. Omidyar developed the original code for an online platform designed for direct person-to-person auctions of collectible items. Launched on Labor Day, the service quickly gained traction, with users trading a diverse range of goods, including a broken laser pointer, which surprised Omidyar but highlighted the platform’s potential. The enterprise was incorporated, and the small fees on each sale funded its rapid expansion. Within a year, the site hosted a quarter-million auctions, a number that grew to two million in the first month of the following year. By mid-1997, nearly 800,000 auctions were taking place daily. In 1997, Auction Web was rebranded as eBay, a name derived from Omidyar’s second choice after his preferred domain was unavailable. The company’s successful public offering in 1998 marked a significant milestone. eBay later acquired PayPal in 2002, though PayPal was spun off in 2015. Omidyar remained active with eBay, serving as chairman for many years before stepping down from the board in 2020, retaining the title of director emeritus.
Cultivating Local and Investigative News
Omidyar’s interest in news media became evident with the launch of Honolulu Civil Beat in 2010. This online service focused on investigative reporting and public affairs in Hawaii, earning recognition as the Best News Website in Hawaii for multiple years. This initiative demonstrated his commitment to civic engagement through journalism. In 2013, Honolulu Civil Beat further expanded its reach by partnering with HuffPost to launch HuffPost Hawaii.
Founding First Look Media
Building on his experience with Honolulu Civil Beat and motivated by significant public information leaks, Omidyar announced the formation of First Look Media in 2013. This nonprofit media organization was conceived as a platform for original, independent journalism, backed by substantial funding. The project was established in collaboration with prominent journalists, including Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Jeremy Scahill. First Look Media’s first publication, The Intercept, launched in February 2014, featuring contributions from these and other journalists. The organization also planned a second publication, intended to focus on financial and political corruption, which was slated to be led by Matt Taibbi. However, this publication, reportedly named Racket, did not proceed as planned, with Taibbi departing First Look Media in October 2014 following internal disagreements. Despite this, First Look Media continued its mission to support independent journalistic endeavors.
