Nerius Numa: Building an International Retail and Investment Group
Nerius Numa is recognized as the founder and ultimate beneficial owner of Vilniaus prekyba, a prominent Lithuanian group of private companies. His entrepreneurial path began with early investments and led to the establishment of a significant retail presence, which later evolved into a diversified international investment management entity.
Early Business Foundations
Numa’s initial capital was generated through real estate sales within Lithuania. These funds were then strategically invested in various company stocks, laying the groundwork for his future ventures. A pivotal step occurred in 1992 with the establishment of Urdzia, a small retail firm in Vilnius, which he co-founded with associates and his brothers. This early retail experience culminated in 1994 with the formation of Vilniaus prekyba, created by nine partners through the consolidation of seven distinct retail stores.
Strategic Growth and Retail Expansion
The expansion of the retail chain was significantly supported by the sale of various company stocks that the group had acquired during post-Soviet privatization initiatives. Notable transactions included the sale of shares in four sugar refineries to a Danish sugar company, a deal which provided substantial capital for the development of the retail business. Other companies whose stocks were part of these transactions included a poultry farm, a mineral water producer, a meat packing facility, and a bakery. This strategic approach enabled Vilniaus prekyba to fund its ambitious growth plans, leading to the opening of a new, larger store format and the introduction of the Maxima Group brand.
Developing a Retail Powerhouse
The Maxima Group brand, which emerged in 1998, marked a significant milestone in the company’s retail journey. The group’s value demonstrated considerable growth, reflecting its strong performance in the market. Vilniaus prekyba has since grown into the largest Lithuanian group of private companies, operating with a substantial workforce across six different countries. Its operations extend beyond Lithuania to other Baltic states, Sweden, Poland, and Bulgaria, showcasing its broad international footprint.
Diversified Investment Management
Today, Vilniaus prekyba functions as an international, diversified investment management company. It oversees investments in a variety of sectors, including retail and pharmacy chains, as well as real estate development and rental services. The company’s core activity involves managing investments in its subsidiaries to ensure reliable asset supervision and to foster the long-term appreciation of their value. It plays a crucial role in analyzing and controlling the activities of its group companies, evaluating strategic directions, coordinating operations, and representing the group as a whole. Vilniaus prekyba is also a key component of the larger Metodika group of companies, which has been recognized among Europe’s largest enterprises.
