Michael Widenius, a Finnish software programmer, has significantly shaped the landscape of database technology and now contributes to the growth of new ventures through his role at OpenOcean. His journey from creating foundational software to investing in emerging companies highlights a continuous engagement with technological advancement and innovation.

A Foundation in Open Source

Widenius’s professional journey began in the early 1980s, working for Tapio Laakso Oy. In 1985, he co-founded TCX DataKonsult AB, a Swedish data warehousing company, alongside Allan Larsson. A pivotal moment arrived in 1995 when he commenced work on the initial version of the MySQL database with David Axmark, which was subsequently released in 1996. This open-source database became a widely adopted solution, establishing Widenius as a key figure in the software community. He was a founding member of MySQL AB, where he served as its chief technical officer. His deep technical knowledge was also evident in his role as a co-author of the MySQL Reference Manual, published in 2002. Widenius remained a central figure at MySQL AB until the company’s acquisition by Sun Microsystems in 2008. Even after the acquisition, he continued to be a primary force behind the ongoing development of MySQL, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the technology he helped create.

Transition to Venture Capital

The sale of MySQL to Sun Microsystems in 2008 marked a significant turning point in Widenius’s career, providing him with substantial capital gains. Later that same year, he embarked on a new professional endeavor by establishing the venture capital firm OpenOcean. This new venture saw him collaborate with Patrik Backman, a former colleague from MySQL AB, along with early advisors Tom Henriksson and Ralf Wahlsten, to co-found the firm. This move represented a strategic shift, applying his extensive experience in building successful technology companies to the realm of investment.

Guiding Innovation at OpenOcean

His background provides a unique perspective, rooted in the practical challenges and successes of developing and scaling open-source software. After his departure from Sun in 2009, Widenius further solidified his legacy in open-source development by forming Monty Program Ab and creating MariaDB, a distinct branch of MySQL. He also became a founding member of the MariaDB Foundation in 2012, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the MariaDB codebase and its community. These continued efforts in the open-source domain underscore his commitment to principles of openness and collaborative development, which likely inform his approach to evaluating potential investments at OpenOcean. His contributions to software and the open-source movement have earned him notable recognition, including the Finnish Software Entrepreneur of the Year prize in 2003 and the Open World Hero award in 2014 from COSS, the Finnish Centre for Open Systems and Solutions, for his work in advancing open-source principles and database technology. In 2016, he was also listed among Finland’s most influential technology experts by Tekniikan Akateemiset TEK. Through his work at OpenOcean, Widenius continues to channel his deep expertise and experience to support the next generation of technology innovators and contribute to the broader ecosystem of technological advancement.
