Melanie Perkins: Building an Accessible Global Platform for Visual Communication

Melanie PerkinsCo-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Canva27 October 20262 min read

The trajectory of web-based digital design shifted significantly when Melanie Perkins recognized the technical barriers inherent in traditional layout applications. While instructing students in basic layout software, she observed how complex established programs were for beginners. That realization prompted her to build accessible web applications that replaced complicated design procedures with simple drag-and-drop mechanics. From an initial venture focused on educational publications to an international technology company, her leadership has transformed how individuals and businesses create visual media.

Early Initiatives and Platform Foundations

Before launching her primary venture, Perkins tested her enterprise concepts in the educational sector. In 2007, she established Fusion Books alongside Cliff Obrecht. The web service provided academic institutions with template libraries and direct editing mechanisms to compile yearbooks without specialized publishing software. The enterprise expanded beyond its initial base in Australia into international markets across New Zealand and France.

Building on that foundation, Perkins sought to create a broader digital platform capable of handling diverse media formats. Seeking initial capital in San Francisco during 2013, the founding team encountered substantial resistance from investors, receiving more than one hundred rejections before securing backing. Early support came through Google Maps co-founder Lars Rasmussen, who connected the team with former Google designer Cameron Adams. Adams joined as co-founder and chief product officer in 2012. With institutional investment from Blackbird Ventures and matching government funding, the enterprise relocated operations from Perth to Sydney to hire engineering talent and publicly launched Canva in 2013.

Scaling the Core Visual Platform

Perkins structured the growth of the business through a series of focused annual goals. Under her direction as chief executive officer, the platform prioritized international adaptation in 2016 by introducing six additional languages to expand its worldwide user base.

By maintaining a freemium business structure, the company allowed users without specialized graphic design backgrounds to generate presentation slides, marketing materials, posters, and digital graphics. Additional functional features followed, including physical printing services and integrated photo manipulation tools. The operational strategy enabled the technology firm to achieve consistent positive free cash flow annually starting in 2017.

Enterprise Expansion and Artificial Intelligence

As the user base expanded, Perkins directed the platform toward commercial enterprise applications and sophisticated automation tools. In September 2022, the company unveiled an expansive package of collaborative workplace software intended to directly challenge software products from major industry competitors including Adobe, Google, and Microsoft.

By 2024, corporate strategy prioritized enterprise clients alongside generative artificial intelligence integration. To bolster these capabilities, the company acquired professional graphics software producer Affinity and image synthesis company Leonardo.Ai. The business subsequently released its own artificial intelligence image generation tool named Dream Lab. Subsequent feature rollouts included Canva Sheets and Canva Code, a generative technology designed to generate interactive components. By April 2025, the platform reached two hundred thirty million global users and generated three billion dollars in annual revenue, cementing its role in workplace visual communications.
