Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner: Constructing a Privacy-Focused Browser Built on Community and User Control

Jon Stephenson von TetzchnerCo-founder and CEO, Vivaldi Technologies27 October 20263 min read

The evolution of internet navigation has been shaped by a select group of software developers who recognized the potential of online access early on. Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, an Icelandic-Norwegian programmer with a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Oslo, spent decades building tools that redefine how people experience the web. After leading one of the industry’s earliest independent software ventures, he shifted his focus toward creating a company centered around community needs and user privacy. Through Vivaldi Technologies, he continues to champion an approach to browser design that prioritizes tailored functionality over data exploitation.

Building the Foundation of Web Browsing

Before establishing his current venture, von Tetzchner built his professional foundation at the Norwegian state telecommunications firm now known as Telenor. Working alongside Geir Ivarsøy between 1991 and 1995, he co-developed an early browsing tool designated as MultiTorg Opera. When the state enterprise chose not to pursue the project further, the two developers acquired the rights to their technology. This transition led to the creation of Opera Software in 1995, which released its flagship browser to the general public the following year.

Over the subsequent decade and a half, von Tetzchner guided the enterprise through substantial international expansion. Under his leadership as chief executive officer, the organization evolved into a global operation employing more than 750 personnel across 13 countries. The company emerged as an early innovator in mobile internet access, eventually accumulating an active user base exceeding 350 million individuals worldwide. Von Tetzchner eventually relinquished his executive post in January 2010, transitioning into a strategic advisory role before departing the company entirely in June 2011 due to operational disagreements with management.

A New Direction with Vivaldi

Rather than departing the software landscape, von Tetzchner embarked on a fresh entrepreneurial endeavor in December 2013 alongside co-founder Tatsuki Tomita. Together, they established Vivaldi Technologies AS, establishing headquarters in Oslo, Norway. The initial focus of the new enterprise was not an immediate browser rollout, but rather the creation of a digital community hub known as vivaldi.net. This online platform delivered a suite of communication utilities, incorporating discussion forums, blogging tools, chat services, photo distribution features, and a free webmail service.

Building upon this community infrastructure, the company formally announced its new web browsing application in January 2015. Following a period of development, version 1.0 of the Vivaldi browser reached official public release in April 2016. The launch marked a return to browser development for many team members, as approximately 20 former Opera employees joined von Tetzchner at the new firm to help construct the platform from the ground up.

An Alternative Business Architecture

Vivaldi Technologies operates under a corporate structure designed to preserve operational independence. Unlike many contemporary tech enterprises funded by venture capital, the Oslo-based business remains self-funded and completely employee-owned. This structure has allowed the firm to scale at a steady pace, growing from 35 staff members in January 2017 to listing 60 employees as of April 2025.

The operational philosophy of the company extends directly to its revenue strategies and product design choices. Vivaldi derives its income primarily through integrated product placement agreements rather than monetizing personal information. The browser actively avoids tracking user activity for profit, maintaining a strict policy against data collection. Additionally, the software omits artificial intelligence algorithms entirely, focusing instead on delivering direct user control and customizable performance. Through this model, von Tetzchner demonstrates that a modern software business can sustain continuous growth while rejecting data-harvesting practices.
