Liu Qiangdong: From a Single Electronics Counter to Global Retail Scale
Liu Qiangdong built one of the world’s most expansive commercial operations by systematically reshaping how merchandise reaches consumers across China. Through decisive operational shifts, he guided the enterprise from conventional shop counters into a dominant global retail force.
Foundations in Commerce and Early Enterprise
Liu completed his undergraduate studies at Renmin University of China in 1996, earning a law degree concentrated in sociology, and subsequently obtained an executive master of business administration from the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai. His initial commercial endeavor, an eatery started during his student years utilizing coding earnings and borrowed funds, collapsed quickly and left substantial debts exceeding two hundred thousand yuan. Following graduation, Liu joined the Japanese health goods company Japan Life, where he gained hands-on experience directing computer systems, managing commercial functions, and overseeing logistics. In June 1998, he launched Jingdong inside the Zhongguancun High-tech Industrial Park in Beijing. Distributing magneto-optical devices, Liu placed an emphasis on certified, legitimate merchandise amidst a marketplace filled with unverified goods. His retail footprint steadily broadened, growing to twelve brick-and-mortar storefronts by 2003.
The Digital Transformation and Catalog Expansion
A critical juncture arrived during the 2003 SARS crisis, which confined staff and customers indoors, stalled operations, and caused financial losses exceeding eight million yuan. Rather than maintaining conventional shops, Liu adjusted the operational blueprint toward remote transactions. In 2004, he introduced his initial online shopping portal and established the entity that would become JD.com. By 2005, Liu closed every physical store to focus exclusively on virtual commerce, while also turning down an acquisition bid valued at eighteen million yuan. The enterprise adopted an expansive catalog approach in 2007, branching out from specialized consumer electronics into a vast spectrum of household merchandise. During this phase of growth, the business operated under the domain 360buy.com before transitioning to the JD.com identity in 2013, accompanied by updated branding and a fresh company mascot.
Public Offering and Corporate Scale
Under Liu’s guidance, the Beijing-headquartered firm progressed toward international capital markets, filing for a United States public listing in January 2014. That May, JD.com raised 1.8 billion dollars on the Nasdaq, establishing the largest initial public offering for a Chinese internet firm in New York and seeing its share price climb approximately fifteen percent on May 22. The corporate structure evolved into an extensive enterprise encompassing logistics, industrial services, insurance, property management, private labels, and healthcare. Achieving more than 194 billion dollars in revenue in 2025, JD.com secured the 47th spot on the Fortune Global 500 list, operating as China’s largest retailer by revenue and the third-largest internet firm globally by sales volume.
Executive Succession and Technological Adoption
In April 2022, Liu relinquished his chief executive position to Lei Xu, assuming the chairmanship to concentrate on long-range corporate planning. Leadership transitioned further in May 2023 when Sandy Ran Xu became chief executive officer. While guiding overarching direction, Liu’s presence continued to inform company initiatives. In April 2024, JD.com deployed an artificial intelligence replica of Liu, designated as procurement and sales manager Brother Dong, during interactive broadcasts for JD Supermarket and JD Home Appliances. The digital likeness drew more than twenty million viewers in its debut hour and drove fifty million yuan in product sales throughout the broadcast, demonstrating the retailer’s ongoing adoption of emerging commercial technologies.
