From Media Legacy to Global Resorts: James Packer's Business Evolution
James Packer, an Australian businessman, inherited control of Consolidated Press Holdings Limited, alongside stakes in Crown Resorts and other entities. His career has been marked by a notable transition from traditional media holdings to a concentrated focus on integrated resort and casino operations.
Diversifying Early Investments and Media Divestment
Early in his career, Packer recognized the potential of online platforms, acquiring stakes in digital classifieds sites such as Seek and Carsales.com. He believed these online ventures posed a challenge to traditional newspaper advertising models. His investment in Seek, for example, saw a substantial return over six years. Concurrently, his family’s magazine group, Australian Consolidated Press, also acquired a significant stake in Carsales.com. A pivotal strategic move involved the decision to divest from the family’s extensive media empire, including Channel Nine and Australian Consolidated Press. This shift was motivated by concerns about the future of free-to-air television amidst the rise of the internet and pay-TV. In a significant transaction, Packer’s team finalized a deal in 2006 to sell a majority share of these media assets, which included interests in Ninemsn and Carsales, to a private equity group. Further sales followed, ultimately leading to a complete divestment from these media holdings.
Building a Global Gaming Enterprise
Following the passing of his father, Packer initiated a strategic pivot away from the family’s long-standing media businesses. His ambition turned towards establishing a worldwide presence in the gaming and tourism sector, leading to the expansion of Crown Resorts. Under his leadership, Crown Resorts developed a portfolio of businesses and investments in integrated resorts and casinos across Australia and Macau, alongside the ownership and operation of a high-end casino in London. The company achieved a market capitalization exceeding $8 billion by late 2017, reflecting its significant growth and presence in the global entertainment industry. Packer served as executive chairman of Crown Resorts, guiding its strategic direction and expansion efforts.
Navigating Challenges and Strategic Exit
Packer’s tenure with Crown Resorts was not without its complexities. He resigned from his role as executive chairman in early 2018. Subsequently, he sold a portion of his stake in the company. His involvement with the telecommunications company One.Tel earlier in his career also presented challenges, with its insolvency resulting in significant financial losses for Publishing and Broadcasting Limited. This event, which led to a substantial settlement, highlighted the inherent risks in certain business ventures. In 2020, Packer appeared before an independent inquiry concerning Crown’s suitability to hold a casino license, where he acknowledged certain past conduct. The inquiry’s findings in 2021 cited concerns related to his actions as a director and the company’s relationships with certain operators, impacting its licensing suitability. In 2022, a major private equity group acquired Crown Resorts for a substantial sum. At the time of this acquisition, Packer held a significant stake in the company, which he divested, receiving a considerable amount for his shares.
Beyond Crown: Diverse Ventures and Future Focus
Beyond his primary focus on Crown Resorts, Packer engaged in a variety of other business activities. These included investments in other media companies, such as Network Ten, though his involvement there was brief. He also made notable investments in daily deals sites through a partnership with his Consolidated Press Holding. In the entertainment sector, he co-founded a joint venture, RatPac Entertainment, which successfully financed films, including a major space thriller. His interests also extended to sports, acquiring a share in an NRL club. More recently, in 2021, he co-founded a property investment venture, NPACT Capital and Investment Management, focusing on luxury residential developments. Following the sale of his Crown Resorts stake, Packer has streamlined his investment portfolio, concentrating on major technology stocks, artificial intelligence, and property, holding significant positions in companies like Nvidia, Meta, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
