His career trajectory, marked by a foundation in finance, led him to co-establish a business conglomerate known for its diverse interests in leisure and entertainment.

From Finance to Founding

Kamarudin Meranun’s professional journey began in the financial sector. After completing his Diploma in Actuarial Science, where he was recognized as the best actuarial student, he applied his expertise as a Portfolio Manager at the Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank from 1988 to 1993. Following this, he took on an executive director role at Innosabah Executive Management in 1994. This background in financial management provided a strong base for his entrepreneurial ventures.

A pivotal moment in his career came with the co-founding of Tune Group alongside Tony Fernandes. This new entity was conceived as a leisure and entertainment corporation, aiming to build a portfolio of businesses that cater to a wide range of consumer needs. A significant early undertaking for Tune Group was the establishment of AirAsia in 2001, a budget airline that would become a cornerstone of the group’s operations. Kamarudin Meranun was appointed as a Director of AirAsia at its inception, marking the beginning of his deep involvement in the aviation industry.

Building an Aviation Powerhouse

Kamarudin Meranun’s leadership within AirAsia has been extensive and varied. After co-founding the airline, he transitioned into an Executive Director role in 2004, further solidifying his operational influence. By 2005, he was appointed Deputy CEO, taking on greater responsibility in the airline’s strategic direction and daily management. His expertise also extended to financial oversight, as he assumed the role of Treasurer in 2012, in addition to his existing duties.

Later in 2012, he moved back to a Director position before ascending to the Chairman of AirAsia in 2013, a role he continued to hold for several years. Currently, he serves as the Executive Chairman of Capital A Berhad, the parent company of AirAsia, underscoring his enduring influence in the airline industry. This progression of roles demonstrates his continuous dedication to developing and expanding the group’s aviation interests, which are central to Tune Group’s identity.
