Strive Masiyiwa: A Global Reach in Telecommunications

Strive MasiyiwaFounder and Executive Chairman, Mascom4 November 20263 min read

Strive Masiyiwa has played a significant role in the expansion of telecommunications across Africa, founding and leading major technology groups. His entrepreneurial journey includes establishing Mascom Wireless Botswana, a mobile telecommunications company based in Gaborone, which became part of a wider network of ventures that have transformed connectivity on the continent and beyond.

Pioneering Connectivity in Southern Africa

Upon returning to his home country after a substantial absence, Strive Masiyiwa initially contributed to the state-owned telephone company as an engineer. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he soon departed to establish his own electrical engineering enterprise, funded by personal savings. The emerging field of mobile cellular telephony prompted him to diversify his business interests into telecommunications. This shift led to the creation of Econet Wireless. However, this venture faced a considerable obstacle when the government declined to grant an operating license. Masiyiwa initiated a legal challenge, asserting that the denial infringed upon freedom of expression. This protracted legal battle, lasting several years, pushed his company to the brink financially. Ultimately, the Constitutional Court ruled in his favor, a decision that dismantled the state’s monopoly in telecommunications. This landmark judgment is widely recognized as a pivotal moment in opening the African telecommunications sector to private investment. The first customer was connected to the new network in the late 1990s, and the company was subsequently listed on the local stock exchange.

Establishing Mascom and Regional Growth

Following a period of challenges, Strive Masiyiwa relocated from his home country, establishing a new and distinct entity, The Econet Wireless Group, in South Africa. From this base, he collaborated with various partners to launch several key businesses across the continent. Among these significant ventures was Mascom Wireless Botswana, a mobile telecommunications company that commenced operations in Gaborone in 1998. Mascom Wireless, with its head office in Gaborone, became an important part of the expanding telecommunications landscape. Other companies established during this period included Econet Wireless International, Econet Wireless Nigeria, Econet Satellite Services, and operations in countries such as Lesotho and Burundi. These initiatives demonstrated a clear strategy of extending mobile network services and related technologies across diverse African markets, laying foundational infrastructure for digital communication.

A Broadening Technology Horizon

Masiyiwa’s entrepreneurial activities continued to expand, encompassing a wide array of technology interests through entities like Econet Global and Cassava Technologies. Econet Global, a privately held international technology group, developed business operations and investments across numerous regions, including Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Latin America, the Middle East, India, and the United Arab Emirates. His involvement extended to partnering in ventures that built mobile networks in other parts of the world, such as New Zealand. A notable success within this portfolio is Liquid Intelligent Technologies, recognized as Africa’s largest satellite and fibre optic business, featuring an extensive network of cable infrastructure spanning the continent from north to south and connecting various nations from east to west. Beyond core telecommunications, Econet Global’s activities diversified into areas such as digital enterprise networks, cybersecurity, cloud services, data centers, artificial intelligence, financial technology, digital platforms, and renewable energy solutions.

Advancing Digital Infrastructure and AI

Further solidifying his commitment to digital infrastructure, Strive Masiyiwa founded Cassava Technologies. This company manages a vast network of fibre optic cables, facilitating internet access across multiple African countries. More recently, Cassava Technologies has focused on advancing artificial intelligence capabilities on the continent. The company is actively working on establishing AI factories in several African nations, including South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco. This initiative has led to collaborations, such as a partnership with a major global technology firm to introduce advanced AI models across Africa, leveraging Cassava’s AI factories. Additionally, Cassava Technologies launched a new platform designed to provide access to various leading AI systems across the continent, further integrating advanced technological tools into the African digital ecosystem. These efforts underscore a continued dedication to enhancing technological infrastructure and capabilities, building on the foundation laid by earlier ventures like Mascom.
