Oleg Boyko: Directing Finstar's Evolution in Global Finance
Oleg Boyko, an international investor, leads Finstar Financial Group as its Chairman, guiding its strategic direction from Switzerland. His career reflects a sustained engagement with various industries, culminating in a focused approach towards the evolving landscape of digital finance.
Early Ventures and Diverse Investments
Boyko’s professional journey began with an early interest in the financial sector, which he pursued while still a student. His initial ventures included working in IT and finance, and he is recognized for introducing credit card readers to Moscow stores in the 1990s. Earlier, in 1988, he engaged in selling used computer equipment. This foundation led to the establishment of National Credit Bank in 1990, where he served as director. His investment portfolio has spanned a wide array of sectors, including financial services, IT, retail, real estate, entertainment, and steel.
Establishing Finstar and Broadening Horizons
In 1996, Boyko, alongside a team of executives, founded Finstar Financial Group. This entity was conceived as an investment and management company, designed to identify, invest in, and actively manage businesses for Boyko and other private investors. Under Finstar, Boyko expanded into the steel industry, becoming a joint investor in EvrazHolding in 1999. This collaboration merged three steel mills, establishing a significant vertically-integrated steel producer. He later divested his stake in EvrazHolding in 2004. The entertainment sector also saw his involvement with the founding of Ritzio Entertainment Group in 2002, which grew to be a major player in casinos and gaming across Eastern Europe before a change in regulations impacted its Russian operations. He also invested in lottery businesses in Russia and Ukraine, including one supporting a major sporting event, before disposing of these interests. Finstar also acquired a controlling stake in Baltic Trust Bank in Latvia in 2003, developing it into a bank with a substantial branch network before selling its stake. In the retail sector, Finstar acquired a significant share in Rive Gauche in 2006, transforming it from a local business into Russia’s second-largest cosmetics and perfumery chain, though Boyko later sold a majority of his stake while retaining a minority interest. He also entered the real estate market through Finstroy in 2006.
Focusing on Digital Finance and Fintech
Currently, Boyko has directed Finstar’s primary focus towards digital financial services and the fintech industry. He views the fintech sector as a significant area for growth, particularly in providing products and services to individuals who are underserved by traditional banking institutions. This strategic direction involves expanding activities in technology-based, data-driven financial services platforms that offer alternatives to conventional banking. Finstar aims to leverage shifts in global consumer behavior, technological advancements, and the increasing availability of mobile devices to deliver these alternative banking options. Finstar’s investment portfolio in this area has included companies such as Vivus Mexico, 4Finance, Spotcap, Prestamos Prima, and Viventor. In 2011, he invested in 4Finance, a Riga-based company, and later reduced his stake, completing divestment in 2022. Boyko announced plans in 2017 to invest substantially in fintech businesses and internal research and development within portfolio companies, initiating a global investment plan with a commitment to consumer lending in the Asia-Pacific region. Beyond finance, Boyko has also engaged in film production, serving as a co-producer for several projects.
