Discount Trading and Beyond: How Nikhil Kamath Helped Reshape Indian Finance

Nikhil KamathCo-founder, Zerodha18 October 20262 min read

Nikhil Kamath has helped reshape how individuals in India engage with capital markets. As a co-founder of Bengaluru-based brokerage firm Zerodha, he contributed to introducing a low-cost, technology-driven approach to an industry traditionally burdened by significant transactional expenses. Through a bootstrapped operational structure and systematic diversification into asset management and early-stage ventures, Kamath has established a broad footprint across India’s financial landscape.

A Low-Cost Architecture for Capital Markets

Before establishing Zerodha, Kamath began his professional trajectory working in a call centre while actively trading equities. In 2006, he stepped into the intermediary sector as a sub-broker, teaming up with Nithin Kamath to form Kamath & Associates. That enterprise concentrated on overseeing public market portfolios on behalf of high-net-worth investors.

Building upon that operational foundation, the duo co-founded Zerodha in 2010. Launched without external venture capital, the firm introduced a discount brokerage framework to India’s financial sector. This model lowered the commissions charged on transactions, providing retail participants with a cost-effective alternative to traditional brokerages. Over time, Zerodha expanded its platform capabilities to encompass trading across equities, commodities, currencies, derivatives, mutual funds, and debt instruments. As an active trading member of the National Stock Exchange of India, Bombay Stock Exchange, and Multi Commodity Exchange, the platform steadily scaled its reach. By May 2024, Zerodha counted 7.5 million active users registered on the National Stock Exchange, securing its position as the second-largest brokerage operating in the country.

Diversifying Asset Management and Venture Capital

Beyond Zerodha, Kamath broadened his investment operations to address institutional and alternative asset categories. In 2020, he co-founded True Beacon, an asset management firm tailored toward ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Operating through privately pooled investment vehicles, the company manages capital targeted directly at Indian markets.

The following year, Kamath collaborated with Abhijeet Pai to launch Gruhas in 2021. The firm allocates capital to early-stage and growth-stage enterprises spanning multiple emerging industries, such as climate technology, senior care, consumer enterprises, sustainability, and real estate technology. Gruhas directs its allocations via targeted funds, notably the Gruhas Collective Consumer Fund and the Earth Fund, an initiative formed alongside Brigade Group to support sustainability and property-focused innovation. Alongside these structures, Kamath holds direct investments across diverse commercial operations, including Ather, Licious, Pee Safe, Nourish You, Subko, InCred Holdings, RDC Concrete, GreenLine Mobility, and Nazara Technology, as well as a five percent stake acquired in D’yavol Spirits in 2025.

Initiatives for Founders and Modern Media

Kamath has also directed resources toward early-career entrepreneurs and digital communication. In April 2024, he introduced WTFund, an initiative providing non-dilutive grant capital exclusively to business founders aged 25 and under. Expanding this support framework, Kamath partnered with Kishore Biyani in December 2025 to create The Foundery, a ninety-day residential entrepreneurship programme situated in Alibaug, Maharashtra.

His professional activities further include digital media production and sports ownership. In March 2024, Kamath began hosting a discussion podcast titled WTF is, featuring executives and prominent domain specialists such as Bill Gates, Neal Mohan, Ted Sarandos, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and Elon Musk. In the realm of digital athletics, Kamath joined Ankit Nagori and Prashanth Prakash to acquire the Bengaluru franchise for the second season of the Global E-Cricket Premier League.
