John Judd: Crafting Engines for Racing Glory
John Judd’s career in motorsport engineering began early, leading him to co-found Engine Developments Ltd., a company that has left a significant mark on racing. From Formula One to endurance events, his expertise in engine design and development has powered numerous teams to competitive success.
Early Career and Foundation
Judd’s journey into engine development commenced shortly after his schooling, securing his initial role at Coventry Climax. There, he received a scholarship for further studies at a local college. In the early part of the 1960s, he contributed to the Coventry Climax Formula One engine, which was then utilized by Jack Brabham. When Brabham moved from Coventry to Repco, he brought Judd on board to collaborate with Phil Irving on engine design. This collaboration involved creating new 3-litre engines for Brabham, which subsequently led to multiple championship victories for both drivers and constructors. Brabham later transitioned to using Ford DFV engines, and Judd was again engaged by him to work on the developmental aspects of these Cosworth DFV units. Following the sale of the Brabham team, Jack Brabham sought to initiate a new engine development venture. This led to the establishment of Engine Developments Ltd. in 1971, co-founded by Brabham and Judd. In the subsequent years, Engine Developments specialized in preparing Cosworth engines for a roster of Formula One teams, including Williams, Arrows, Lotus, Ensign, and Fittipaldi. The company, based in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, was among the first authorized to maintain and rebuild Cosworth DFV engines.
Expanding Horizons
As the 1970s drew to a close, Judd and his team broadened their scope, venturing into IndyCar racing. A notable engagement in 1980 saw Judd commissioned by Honda to develop an engine for their re-entry into Formula Two, a project undertaken in conjunction with Ron Tauranac’s Ralt team. Engine Developments Ltd. continued to diversify its involvement across various motorsport disciplines, providing engines for different formula series, sports car racing, and touring car events. The company maintained its role primarily as a privateer engine supplier, though it also formed associations with manufacturers such as MG, Mazda, and Honda.
Return to Formula One and Partnerships
Engine Developments Ltd. made its return to Formula One competition in the 1988 season, supplying engines to teams including Williams, Ligier, and March. A significant agreement was reached in 1991 when Judd secured a deal with Scuderia Italia to provide V10 engines for a Dallara-designed car. The company further solidified its presence in Formula One through a partnership with Yamaha, established in 1992, focused on building and developing engines. This collaboration’s most prominent achievement occurred when a car powered by their engine secured a second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The partnership concluded at the beginning of the 1998 season, but Judd continued the development of his V10 engine through 1998 and 1999.
Endurance and Touring Success
With the advent of the new century, Judd and his company shifted their focus towards touring car racing and the Le Mans Series. This strategic move yielded success, including a victory in the American Le Mans Series in 2001 with Dick Barbour Racing. The company also achieved a second-place finish in the teams championship of the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2002, collaborating with Doran. A partnership with Ray Mallock Ltd. in 2004 proved fruitful, leading to a class victory for their XV675 engine at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2005.
