From Harvard Dorms to Global Tech: Eduardo Saverin and the Genesis of Meta

Eduardo SaverinCo-founder, Chief Financial Officer and Business Manager, Meta Platforms18 October 20262 min read

Eduardo Saverin played a central role in that emergence, providing foundational operational oversight and capital during the earliest phases of what became one of the most prominent companies in modern technology.

Analytical Foundations at Harvard

Saverin developed an analytical approach to commerce during his undergraduate education at Harvard University. Pursuing an economics degree, he lived at Eliot House and immersed himself in student organizations, serving as the president of the Harvard Investment Association while maintaining membership in the Phoenix S.K. Club and the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. His early business initiatives demonstrated an interest in quantitative analysis and market movements. While still an undergraduate student, he applied meteorological data to evaluate hurricane paths, utilizing these forecasts to trade oil futures and generate three hundred thousand dollars. In 2006, Saverin completed his studies at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics.

Establishing Facebook

During his junior year at Harvard, Saverin connected with sophomore Mark Zuckerberg. The two identified an unfilled demand for an online networking service structured specifically for Harvard undergraduates. Collaborating to address this opportunity, they launched Facebook in 2004. Establishing the service required an initial capital base, and both Saverin and Zuckerberg committed one thousand dollars apiece to finance the platform. As operations gained traction, each agreed to invest an additional eighteen thousand dollars to support ongoing development. Within this enterprise, Saverin assumed the responsibilities of business manager and chief financial officer, guiding administrative setup and initial financial management for the burgeoning site.

The Evolution of Meta Platforms

The organization established in 2004 under the name TheFacebook, Inc. soon underwent rapid organizational and strategic changes. By 2005, the enterprise adopted the corporate name Facebook, Inc., subsequently establishing its primary headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The company expanded far beyond its collegiate beginnings, assembling a network of communication applications that includes Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads alongside the primary Facebook service. To sustain this scale, the enterprise constructed a substantial advertising infrastructure, which generated ninety-seven point eight percent of its overall revenue in 2023. In 2021, the corporation rebranded as Meta Platforms, Inc., signaling a broad pivot toward the metaverse and the creation of an interconnected network centered on virtual and augmented reality systems. This transition is backed by substantial capital deployment, with research and development investments reaching thirty-five point three billion dollars in 2022, placing Meta among the largest corporate research spenders globally and earning high placements on both the Fortune 500 and the Forbes Global 2000.

Venture Capital and Global Investments

Following his tenure establishing Facebook, Saverin broadened his operational focus within the global technology and investment landscapes. Relocating his base of operations to Singapore, he partnered with Raj Ganguly to launch B Capital, serving as co-founder and co-chief executive officer of the venture capital organization. He also directed capital into early-stage enterprise ecosystems, backing the startup accelerator and venture fund Antler in 2020. His early collaborative efforts in founding Facebook were also depicted through Andrew Garfield’s portrayal in the feature film The Social Network.
