From OCR to AI: David Yang's Enduring Impact at ABBYY
David Yang stands as a prominent figure in the realm of information technology, recognized for his entrepreneurial endeavors and his foundational role at ABBYY. As the chairman of the board of directors, he has guided the company through significant advancements in digital processing and artificial intelligence. His career began with a strong academic background, culminating in a degree from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and later a dissertation in physical and mathematical sciences.
The Genesis of ABBYY
Yang’s entrepreneurial journey in IT began in 1989 with the co-founding of Bit Software, which later became ABBYY, alongside Alexander Moskalev. From its inception, the company focused on developing innovative software solutions. A significant early achievement was the creation of FineReader in 1993, a program designed for text recognition that quickly gained international traction. By 2006, more than 14 million copies of this product were sold annually, reaching over 20 million users by 2014. Another early development was the Lingvo electronic dictionary, which Yang developed in 1989 and was used by more than 7 million people by 2014. ABBYY also ventured into hardware with the Cybiko communicator, releasing initial samples in the US in 2000 and selling over 500,000 units by the end of that year before the project concluded.
Expanding Reach and Innovation
ABBYY demonstrated substantial growth and market penetration over the years. By 2008, financial experts estimated the company’s annual turnover to be between $80–85 million, with a dominant market share in Russia exceeding 95% and more than 50% in Europe. By 2012, ABBYY’s revenue had grown significantly, reaching an estimated $230–240 million. The company’s global footprint expanded to include 14 companies across the US, Canada, and Japan by 2014, employing over 1,250 people. Its products were sold in 200 countries, serving more than 40 million users. ABBYY continued to innovate, launching Findo.io in 2016, a project designed to help users search for information across personal documents, contacts, mailboxes, and social networks. The company also engaged in extensive collaborations, partnering with over 400 global entities by 2018, including major technology firms like Samsung, Fujitsu, Epson, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, RICOH, and Xerox. ABBYY’s artificial intelligence solutions were adopted by numerous prominent organizations, including Sberbank, VTB, Raiffeisenbank, Alfa-Bank, Tinkoff Bank, PwC, and various government bodies.
Diverse Ventures and a Global Outlook
Beyond his core work at ABBYY, David Yang has initiated other significant ventures. In 2005, he co-founded Iiko with Maxim Nalsky, a company dedicated to creating automation systems for catering businesses. This system was utilized by 3,800 restaurants in 13 countries by 2013, and currently serves more than 40,000 restaurants across 17 countries. In 2017, Yang launched Yva.ai, an algorithm-based business performance management system leveraging artificial intelligence. His broader engagement in the business world also included a role on the Board of Directors of Forbes Russia in 2019. In 2023, he co-founded INAU, a startup focused on using artificial intelligence to assist individuals with mental disabilities in communication. ABBYY itself underwent a strategic shift in 2022, transitioning its operations to position itself as an international company with its headquarters located in the United States, reflecting a global focus on its specialization in OCR, AI document processing, automation, and data capture.
