ThaiBev's Ascendance: Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi's Business Trajectory

Charoen SirivadhanabhakdiFounder, ThaiBev4 November 20262 min read

Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi established Thai Beverage, a prominent company in the Southeast Asian beverage sector. His journey began with early involvement in the alcoholic drinks market, laying the groundwork for what would become a significant enterprise with a diverse portfolio.

Forging a Path in Beverages

Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi’s business career began by supplying distilleries that produced Thai whiskey, a sector that was a state-run monopoly at the time. Through the connections he developed, he secured a license to produce his own alcoholic beverages. During this period, all liquor production was state-owned, and Charoen managed to obtain rights to a portion of the market. A pivotal moment arrived when the remaining state licenses became available for bids. Charoen successfully secured a substantial loan, utilizing his extensive inventory of alcohol as collateral, and subsequently won all the concessions. This established a strong market position for his beverage companies, which then contributed significant royalties to the national excise department.

Brewing Success with Chang

In a strategic move to enter Thailand’s expanding beer market, Charoen collaborated with a Danish brewer. At the time, the market was largely dominated by an established local brand. Over a few years, drawing upon the knowledge gained from this partnership, he launched his own beer brand, Chang, named after the Thai word for ‘elephant’. Within a relatively short period, Chang beer captured a significant share of the local market. The Danish partner eventually withdrew from the joint venture, and Charoen later successfully pursued legal action against the company.

ThaiBev’s Expanding Horizon

Today, Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, widely known as ThaiBev, stands as a major beverage company in Thailand and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. The company operates distilleries not only in Thailand but also in other countries, including the UK and China. ThaiBev is listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange and commands a substantial market capitalization. A significant expansion for the firm occurred with the acquisition of Fraser and Neave, Ltd., a conglomerate that includes properties across Asia and soft-drinks operations. This substantial transaction added to ThaiBev’s group portfolio of assets. Charoen also holds the position of chairman for Fraser and Neave, Ltd., alongside his role as founder of Thai Beverage.
