How Dan Bricklin Built Software Arts and Modern Financial Computing

Dan Bricklin transformed early personal computing by replacing manual accounting grids with automated digital recalculation. His technical foundation built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, combined with practical exposure to business management at Harvard University, led directly to the creation of the first electronic spreadsheet. Through Software Arts, the enterprise he established with Bob Frankston, Bricklin demonstrated how microcomputers could become indispensable operational tools for corporate offices and personal productivity.

Before launching Software Arts in 1979, Bricklin gained hands-on technical experience working on word processing systems at Digital Equipment Corporation and point-of-sale hardware at FasFax. While completing a Master of Business Administration program, he observed the tedious nature of manual financial projections, which required complete recalculation whenever a single value changed. Collaborating with Frankston, he programmed a fourth-generation software solution designed for the Apple II microcomputer. The application permitted instant updates across an entire grid, reducing tasks that took twenty hours down to fifteen minutes. To distribute the invention, the duo founded Software Arts and arranged sales through an external publishing firm originally named Personal Software, which later rebranded as VisiCorp. Selling at a price point of one hundred dollars, the application achieved immediate commercial success and spurred widespread adoption of personal computing hardware in business environments.
