In the latest issue of MO Derivative Rollover Note, the research desk at Motilal Oswal argues that market sentiment remains a delicate balancing act of strong individual listings, sector rotation, and macroeconomic caution.
The report breaks down the trajectory of the October series, where the Nifty index slipped below the 22200 mark early on before attempting a recovery that ultimately stalled beneath 23200. Open interest dropped by 12.1 percent alongside a marginal 0.1 percent index movement, pointing to mild short-covering. Meanwhile, Nifty rollovers reached 72.7 percent, landing below the quarterly average of 74.8 percent as call writers kept aggressive upward moves capped.
Market breadth showed severe divergence across sectors. While the headline Nifty slipped 50 points to close at 22,699, midcap and smallcap indices rallied up to 1 percent on strong quarterly results. IT and Oil & Gas sectors took a 2 percent hit, dragged down by profit-booking and Brent crude climbing to $115 per barrel. On the flip side, Auto and Consumer goods gained roughly 1.5 percent each.
A major highlight of the trading session was the blockbuster debut of Jio Platforms. According to the newsletter, the stock “made a strong stock market debut, listing at Rs 1,358 per share, a premium of 21.36% over its IPO issue price of Rs 1,119.” It went on to climb roughly 27 percent, closing at Rs 1,419 and pushing its market capitalisation to an astounding Rs 11 lakh crore.
Technically, daily charts for both the Nifty and S&P BSE Sensex flashed doji patterns, signaling deep indecision between bulls and bears. The Nifty must hold above 22700 to target 22800 and 22900 zones, whereas slipping below could invite a slide back to 22600 or 22500. Similarly, the Sensex remains locked in a four-session range, needing to clear 73300 to spark a meaningful breakout.
On the derivatives front, option data maps out a broader trading range between 23200 and 22300, with an immediate band of 22500 to 22900. Maximum Call open interest sits heavily at the 23000 strike, while Maximum Put open interest anchors at 22500. Positive setups were spotted in names like Bluestar, Apollo Hospital, and Trent, while weakness lingered in Reliance, Swiggy, and ONGC.
Why it matters for founders
For startup leaders and founders watching the public markets, this report highlights the sheer resilience of domestic liquidity even amid macroeconomic crosswinds like shifting US Federal Reserve expectations and surging oil prices. Mega-listings like Jio Platforms prove that massive capital is readily available for dominant consumer platforms that demonstrate scale. However, the stark divergence between struggling tech indices and rallying midcaps is a reminder that public markets are demanding rigorous earnings validation over pure growth narratives.
